Discover a natural wonder millions of years in the making: fossilized palm root points from Madagascar. These unique pieces, formed over eons, tell the fascinating story of wood transforming into stone.
How Does Wood Become Fossilized?
This remarkable process occurs when silica-rich groundwater seeps into roots and wood under immense pressure. The silica crystallizes and gradually replaces the organic material with microcrystalline quartz, primarily chalcedony and jasper. This metamorphic phenomenon turns the wood and roots of ancient trees into a crystalline structure, technically a member of the chalcedony family, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
